Site Kill-Test · V1

Know in 2 minutes whether a site is worth pursuing — or kill it now

A 4-axis due diligence screen returning a PROCEED / CAUTION / KILL verdict with full evidence. Built for renewable energy developers who screen 20 sites to build one.

Three possible outcomes. All evidence-backed.

Every screen returns one of three verdicts — with the data, thresholds, and reasoning behind each axis.

PROCEED

Resource ✓ · Grid ✓ · Land ✓ · Environment ✓

All four axes pass threshold. No structural blockers detected. Worth advancing to site visit and pre-development agreement.

CAUTION

One or more axes are AMBER (MITIGABLE)

A conditional risk exists — grid congestion, slope constraint, or buffer zone proximity. Requires specific mitigation before commitment.

KILL

A STRUCTURAL blocker was detected

At least one axis fails with no feasible mitigation path. Save the pre-development budget. Move to the next site.

From coordinates to verdict in four steps

No data upload. No waiting for a consultant. Enter the site and get a decision-ready output in under 2 minutes.

1

Enter site

Search by place name or click on the map. Set technology (wind / solar) and declared capacity.

2

Engine runs

Four data APIs are queried in parallel — Global Wind/Solar Atlas, GEM capacity database, OSM, and Copernicus.

3

Axes scored

Each axis returns GREEN / AMBER / RED with the raw signal value, threshold, and source citation.

4

Verdict issued

Overall verdict with per-axis reasoning. Export as one-page PDF. Share with your IC committee.

What the screen actually checks

Each axis maps directly to a kill-test that experienced developers run manually. The platform automates the data retrieval and threshold comparison.

🌬️

Axis 1 — Resource Quality

Wind: mean wind speed at hub height (Hellmann extrapolation), capacity factor from DTU Global Wind Atlas. Solar: GHI and specific yield from PVGIS v5.3 with tilt/azimuth optimisation.

Wind RED: CF < 22% · AMBER: CF 22–28% · GREEN: CF ≥ 28%
Solar RED: yield < 1,000 kWh/kWp · GREEN: ≥ 1,400 kWh/kWp

Axis 2 — Grid Saturation

Queried operational + pipeline capacity (GEM dataset, Feb 2026) within 20 km radius. Compared against country-specific grid absorption threshold from 35-country cohort data.

RED: existing MW > 3× absorption threshold
AMBER: > 1.5× · GREEN: ≤ 1.5×
🗺️

Axis 3 — Land Constraints

Slope (Open-Meteo elevation), settlement setback (OSM buildings), water buffer (OSM waterways). Estimates buildable footprint % against declared capacity requirement.

Wind: 40 ha/MW · Solar: 1.5 ha/MW
RED if buildable footprint < 60% of required area
🌿

Axis 4 — Environmental Risk

Protected area proximity (Natura 2000 for EU, OSM globally), bird flyway intersection for wind sites (major global flyways hardcoded). EU Habitats Directive cost flag if within 2 km buffer.

RED: site overlaps protected area
AMBER: within 2 km buffer · GREEN: > 2 km clear

Common questions

Is this a replacement for a proper environmental impact assessment?
No. The kill-test is a pre-development triage tool — it answers "is this site worth spending more money on?" before you commission an EIA, a site visit, or a wind measurement campaign. It is not a substitute for regulatory environmental assessment, which requires site-specific survey data and statutory consultation. The output says so explicitly.
How accurate are the resource numbers?
Wind capacity factors from the Global Wind Atlas are validated against measured data within ±5–8% for flat terrain, ±10–15% for complex terrain. Solar yield from PVGIS-SARAH3 is validated against European ground stations within ±5%. Both are suitable for pre-development triage — not for bankable P50 reports, which require on-site measurement campaigns.
What does the GEM grid saturation check actually query?
It queries the Global Energy Monitor's database of 128,000+ wind and solar assets (Feb 2026 release) within a 20 km radius of the site. Operational + construction + announced capacity is summed and compared against a country-specific absorption threshold derived from national grid interconnection queues, DSO capacity publications, and IRENA country data. Full cohort data is visible on the methodology page.
Does the environmental axis check WDPA globally?
Currently: Natura 2000 is checked for EU sites via a PostGIS query. Non-EU sites use OSM protected area tags, which have variable coverage. Full WDPA integration is pending a commercial-use licence from UNEP-WCMC. Non-EU outputs carry an explicit data gap flag. This is disclosed on every non-EU output.
How do I share the output with my IC committee?
Every screen generates a one-page PDF with the radar chart, per-axis table (signal value / threshold / verdict / source), and the PROCEED / CAUTION / KILL verdict. Download and attach it to your project brief, or paste it into your IC memo template.
Do credits expire?
No. Purchased credits never expire and are tied to your account. The free screen credit is granted once per account on signup.
